Description

The idea of manual therapy, i.e. the possibility to treat with the sole use of hands and without any other therapeutic agent is as old as the human being. However, such a therapy cannot be used nowadays without relying on a solid scientific basis and without having a rigorous knowledge of the techniques which effectively allow treating with hands only to act upon the musculoskeletal system without causing any injury.

Several decades of work and research have allowed to develop effective and well-recognised techniques for orthopedic physical rehabilitation treatment. These techniques are today taught to physiotherapists at university level in numerous countries where orthopedic manual therapy is recognized to the extent of having become a complete specialization in physiotherapy in some countries.

Several countries in the European Union currently aim to have this specialisation in manual therapy recognised for adequately trained physiotherapists.

Numerous concepts, such as those developed by Mulligan, Kaltenborn, Maitland….based on biomechanic and on clinical experience have as common denominator the more general approach which is Manual Therapy.

The training covers all the joints, integrates, applies and discusses the different concepts on the basis of the latest physiological and biomechanical knowledge.

Objectives and competences developed

Learning and mastering of manual techniques and examination of the joints of the axial and appendicular skeleton.

Contents and specificities

PerFormance is proposing training in manual therapy spread over a period of two years and composed of five seminars per year.

The diagnostic tools taught are the mastering of palpatory anatomy and the manual clinical examination, the critical development of the haptic sense and the rational interpretation of functional tests.

The therapeutic tools taught cover specific mobilisation techniques, manipulation techniques at high speed and low amplitude, neuromuscular inhibition techniques, myotensive techniques, harmonic techniques and muscular reinforcement techniques.

All therapeutic tools are taught in clinical situations which involve the participants of the training as well as the teachers.

Method and course material

Recent scientific data in the biomechanical and clinical field form the foundation upon which the training is based. The courses are provided by well renowned practitioners in line with the PerFormance  Charta.

Always in line with the PerFormance Charta, the assumptions which underlie the techniques taught are based on the fundamental sciences. Dogmatism is excluded and a critical mind is always desired and encouraged.

The training is carried out by renowned teachers with extensive experience both at clinical and scientific level. The focus is set on the professional  practice and the mastering of technique.

Duration

Each seminar comprises two days and a half of theroretical and practical training from Thursday to Saturday, 20 hours). Saturday afternoon is reserved for a physical activity in the mountains which will conclude the seminar.

5 seminars of 3 days each (100 hours). It is compulsory to register for the complete training (five seminars).
