Description

The application of adhesive bandages and tapes seems to find its origin in ancient Egypt. Archeologists have discovered evidence of the use of adhesive materials associated to cloth aimed at stabilizing deficient human segments.

This method used until the middle of the 19th century was considerably improved with the progress made in the textile and chemical industries. The addition of zinc oxide, for example, allowed to develop the adhesive quality of bandages and tapes.

Since then the adhesive taping and strapping materials have constantly evolved; there exists today a vast array of products which are used by medical doctors, physiotherapists as well as by sports professionals.

Nowadays, traumatology, and more particularly sports traumatology uses regularly adhesive straps and tapes whether supple or rigid. These allow amongst others, to protect lesions which are in the process of healing, to compress small hemorrhages, to support “fresh” lesions, and to stabilize a joint or to reduce its amplitude.

Modern strapping and taping techniques can also constitute excellent therapeutic adjuvants used in the case of bruises, muscle tear, ligament sprains, dislocated joints, tendinitis and myositis.

Moreover, the preventive role of adhesive strapping and taping is unanimously recognized. Indeed, when faced with a sports activity, which for some may become professional, attempting to reduce the risk of accident has become unavoidable in the economic and human management of sport clubs.

For some years now, the laying of colored and lacerated “physiotape” on the skin surface appears to have interesting physiological effects as far as prevention and the easing of pain in the soft tissue is concerned. This approach is also taught in practice and its founding scientific principles are discussed during the training.
